Action Notices/Updates
Terminal Area Season Regulations
TILLAMOOK BAY: sturgeon
Angling for sturgeon has slowed. Sand shrimp fished on the bottom in the
deeper channels will produce the best results. Move frequently to find fish
if you are not getting bites.
TRASK RIVER: steelhead
Winter steelhead angling is slow. A few stray hatchery fish being caught.
Fish seem to be spread out through the river system, with some fish
available in the north and south forks. However, best angling for fresh fish
is in the lower river until we get more rain.
WILSON RIVER: steelhead
Winter steelhead angling is very slow. The river is low and clear- use
smaller baits and lures to attract shy fish. Drift boaters are having to
drag their boats through several areas of the lower river. Best chance at
fresh fish is in the lower river, even in the upper areas of tidewater.
KILCHIS RIVER: steelhead
Winter steelhead angling has been slow. The catch is a mixture of hatchery
and wild fish. The river is very low and clear.
NECANICUM RIVER: steelhead
Winter steelhead angling is very slow. Fish the lower river for best results
until more rains come. Boaters should use caution, as there have been
reports of impassable log jams along the river and the river is at low
flows.
NORTH FORK NEHALEM RIVER: steelhead
The run of hatchery winter steelhead is almost over, although the occasional
fresh fish is still available. More wild fish are showing in the catch.
Fishing has been slow as the river is very low and clear. Call 503-368-5670
for recorded fishing information.
NESTUCCA RIVER AND THREE RIVERS: steelhead
Winter steelhead angling is very slow. The river is low and clear. Hatchery
fish are spread out through the river up to Blaine, and in Three Rivers.
Bobber and jigs or small drifted baits have been the most productive lately.
Look for fresh fish to be lower in the system until rains raise the river.
Bottomfish
Mild weather and ocean conditions are predicted for mid week, which will
allow fishers to get out on the ocean. Fishing for rockfish, lingcod and
other groundfish species inside jetties can be productive.
A list of fish included in the six-fish marine bag limit is found in the
2009 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations (page 100) and online at
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp
All salmon and Pacific halibut fishing in the ocean is closed.
CRABS
The crab harvest is slow in most Oregon bays and is expected to taper off
during the coming months. Few crabbers got limits in most of the bays
surveyed with most getting one or two crab. Recreational Bay Crab Survey
data on catch statistics are updated every month during the winter on the
ODFW Web site at the recently-launched
Crabbing Reports page.
Crab rings and
fishing boat rentals are available at the Garibaldi Marina.

Chinook Salmon
Of the
five species of Pacific salmon, the Chinook and Coho are the most important to
anglers. The two are often found in the same waters and pursued in much the same
way, but the Chinook is the larger of the two and highly prized among anglers.
When hooked, Chinook like to slug it out, while Coho's are acrobatic and quick.
Chinook are also known as the king salmon or spring salmon.
Chinook are powerful
swimmers that migrate hundreds of miles up northwest rivers to their spawning
grounds, and they can grow huge. The rod-and-reel world record was taken in
Alaska's Kenai River in 1985 and weighed 97 pounds, 4 ounces. Most fish caught
by northwest anglers, however, range from 15 to 40 pounds. At the end of a
fishing line, Chinooks are absolute brutes - hard-running, stubborn fighters
that will give you all the challenge you can handle, and sometimes much more.
This section of the Oregon
coast provides some of the finest bay and river fishing in the state for huge
King salmon, Coho salmon and steelhead. The type of salmon returning to
Tillamook Bay are typically referred to as Tillamook Hawgs. Visit Garibaldi Marina for your next
action packed fishing adventure and experience some of the most productive
saltwater fishing and crabbing that Oregon has to offer. Tillamook fishing
guides and ocean charters also.
